Self-Learning or AI-Reliant? Educating the Public on the Importance of Balance in Learning Styles

Abstract

Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology have had a significant impact on the learning process, but have also raised concerns about the decline in student learning independence. This community service activity aims to promote the importance of balance between independent learning and the use of AI technology in education. The implementation method used was participatory educational outreach through interactive lectures, video screenings, group discussions, and individual reflections. The activity was conducted in a FITK classroom with 35 students from the MPI department participating. The results of the activity showed an increase in understanding and critical attitudes towards the use of AI, as demonstrated by an increase in pre-test scores to post-test scores as well as qualitative findings from group discussions. It can be concluded that this outreach successfully raised participants' awareness to use AI wisely and continued to foster a spirit of independent learning.
