Strengthening the Competence of Students with Special Needs through Independent KKN Program in SLB Negeri Pringsewu

Abstract

The Independent Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata Mandiri / KKN Mandiri) is designed to bridge academic knowledge and community needs through practical engagement. This study reports the implementation of the program at SLB Negeri Pringsewu, a special school for children with disabilities. Key challenges identified included limited literacy resources, low classroom concentration, and the need to strengthen life skills and religious values. In response, Universitas Muhammadiyah Lampung students organized a series of activities: (1) university introduction sessions, (2) vocational training in culinary skills, (3) reinforcement of religious values through daily congregational prayers, (4) development of a simple school administration information system, and (5) student mentoring during Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebration. The program outcomes demonstrated improved student awareness of higher education opportunities, enhanced vocational and technological competencies, and the establishment of consistent religious practices. Overall, the KKN Mandiri program effectively contributed to the holistic development of students with special needs and strengthened collaboration between higher education institutions and special schools.
