Abstract

Education cannot be separated from the ideology that develops in a society, and this is also true of Indonesia's pluralistic society. Education in Indonesia is currently characterized by at least two paradigms, namely Liberal Education, which is based on the ideology of liberalism, and Multicultural Education, which is based on the ideology of multiculturalism. This study aims to describe the suitability of applying liberal education ideology and multicultural education in the midst of cultural plurality in Indonesian society. The results of this study begin with a description of several concepts, including: the understanding/ideology of liberalism and liberal education, and the understanding/ideology of multiculturalism and multicultural education, and cultural plurality. The next discussion is the core of this research, namely regarding Cultural Plurality in Indonesia and the Role of Liberal and Multicultural Education. At the end of this research, the fundamental similarities and differences between these educational ideologies are concluded, in relation to the pluralistic cultural conditions in Indonesia.
